The Last Time - For REAL John Farnham

This is the last one! The last blog that I will post for MPI104!

...unless I get bored and decide to update it again later because I am super cool like that.

Over the course of the last 13 or so weeks I have learnt lots of interesting and useful stuff in MPI104.
First of all we were introduced to the wonderful world of blogger. Previously I had not been in the possession of a blog due to my general dislike of them; but surprisingly enough its not so bad. This is a good way to keep in contact with friends and comment on their sites, store links to websites that you enjoy, upload videos and photos and of course; spread the enlightenment of your every thought onto the general population.
Then there was Flickr. As you may have previously read I had a negative reaction to it at first (due to the exceptionally annoying and extremely pointless removal of a certain VOWEL!) But since this lesson the practicality of Flickr as a website has grown on me, and I now find myself bored and searching through random peoples photos and even making an alternate account for personal use outside of class.
Then onto Del.icio.us. Delicious is a book marking website that enables you to access places that you have bookmarked no matter what computer you are on.
In the last few weeks we have been learning about different things such as RSS feeds, counters for websites, and blog-like-search-engines like Technorati. Information and my thoughts on these can be found in the corresponding blog posts below.
I can't wait to continue to explore different aspects of the internet in my multimedia subject next semester and look forward to creating even better webpages (it wont be hard) than my current one (which can be accessed here)

So... Until next time my Amigos!

TECHNORATI!!

We were supposed to sign up for Technorati accounts and claim our blogs so that we could put a badge onto our blogs, but at the time to site was down so we were not able to. So I've only just gotten around to doing it recently.
Technorati is described by Wiki as a search engine for blogs, but we are supposed to write how it is different from google but to tell you the truth I dont quite understand how it isnt? Is it because you can add favourites and keep up to date with things? Then I guess it is just a combo of google and the bookmarking tool... Anyways,I find Technorati weird and kind of annoying but to be honest once i got my badge up and working I did feel quite a large sense of accomplishment.

My blog is ranked 4, 814, 527... I don't think it is going so well.

So there... That's it.

Athene, Rss and Counters

Firstly Athene-

Our Athene accounts are hosted by CSU, they area website that we each have created personally on IWeb and then uploaded onto the web.
IWeb is very basic and their are a lot of things that I don't really understand- for example how do you customise the templates and stuff? I have changed all of the page elements and the general layout but how do you customise the background colour etc? I'm so confused...

In order to upload the IWeb documents onto the internet we use FTP (File Transfer Protocol). The purpose of FTP is to transfer data reliably and effectively, to allow hosts to various hosts the power to upload and change the site from remote locations and also to promote the concept of file sharing- as primarily in remote hosting, file sharing is the key concept in hosting a website.
This can serve many positives as you can access the site from anywhere in the world using a FTP Program such as Fetch- BUT - you also do need every file and folder created when publishing the site uploaded to the server in order for the site to run and operate to the way in which you designed it.
A negative in FTP is that with a small program called ‘Packetsniffer’ anyone’s personal information or data uploaded using the FTP can be altered, manipulated or stolen. This can be prevented by using more complicated versions of FTP, these include SFTP or FTPS.

You can access my Athene account here

Counter and RSS-

A few weeks ago we added counters to our blogs and iWeb pages. The reason for counters on sites is to see the amount of people that visit the site and on more advanced counters you can even check the amount of times they have visited. Counters work on the users IP address, and can monitor the amount of times data and information built into the website is transferred to that particular IP address.
We also added RSS feeds to our blogs and to our IWeb accounts, this seems like a really good idea, especially for keeping up to date with things like the MPI104 blog and some of my favourite webcomics- these and more can be seen in the RSS feed that I have on the right hand side of the page----->
